In network marketing, a down line remains within your company’s network. Sure, you are building your network, but you are vulnerable to a couple of factors:
- Competition! There’s no loyalty nowadays. People jump from company to company all the time. Friendships are made and destroyed almost overnight. You can train someone as much as you can and suddenly, they see a better opportunity and SWOOP, they are gone and are now competing AGAINST you.
- Attrition! If you do not build any loyalty or relationship with your down line, you will lose them somewhere down the ‘line’ (mind the pun). You may be able to have great relationships with your front line or those 3-4 levels below you, but what happens if you have down lines 10 levels down and beyond? Would you be able to take care of all of them? You can’t ‘save’ all of them without your personal involvement, but there is a way to solve it if you know the right marketing techniques.
- Company stability. Another problem with building a down line is that there is no guarantee that your company will pay your bills for the rest of your life. Imagine if you build a down line of 10,000 members and all of a sudden, your network marketing company gets acquired by another company or they merge with their competition. There could be a company restructuring and your company could even change their compensation plan from a Unilevel to a binary overnight. In essence, your down line could all be here today and 10,000 gone at once (some even overnight).
That is the main reason why I prefer to build a down LIST instead of a down line.
A down list is like a personal mailing or name list that sits on the Internet. The advantages of building a down list is as follows:
- I get to personally keep in touch with all my members on my mailing list whether they are 1,000 people or 100,000 people.
- I get to communicate with them all at the SAME TIME no matter how many people are there.
- I get to use an auto-responder to manage my support emails, my ‘latest news’ broadcasts, my newsletter and my marketing tips all on autopilot. In essence, I don’t have to worry if they are all over the place – one email (even automated, scheduled emails) is all it takes to maintain constant communication.
- I get to build a solid relationship with my list.
Best of all, with this kind of loyalty I have with my list, I can move to ANY network marketing company and my list will still follow me all the way.
