Affiliate Marketing Survival Tips

So you have joined what seems to be a great affiliate program. You have gone and developed some banners, ads and other marketing materials to use to promote this merchant. Even after all the planning, you may find yourself struggling with sales and developing new marketing strategies. Below you will find some of the most common issues affecting your commission checks.

 Soggy cookies

Most merchants provide cookies to track your affiliate ID. Now most people do not buy on their first visit to the site, so cookies provides a way for the merchant to track your affiliate ID and when the customer returns you still get credited for the sale. Some last for a single session only while others track their cookies for years!

If the user however clears his cookies often, or has cookie blocking software or the merchant’s software is not working properly then there is not much that your can do. The only advice that can be given here is finding a merchant that provides an acceptable cookie length – anything more than a month is fine. Then ensure that the particular merchant has a good reputation among other affiliates. Join forums and discussion groups, chat to other affiliates that have been promoting the merchant and find out what the good and the bad points are while working as an affiliate for the particular merchant.

 Multiple payment methods

If you are promoting an affiliate program through an affiliate network such as clickbank then the chances are that they provide multiple methods of payment. If you are not promoting through one of these networks, check the merchant site carefully for payment methods available to the customer. Many payment methods are good for the customer, but bad for the affiliate.

The best methods of payment are credit cards and PayPal. You do not want to be promoting programs that accept western union or checks as payment.

 Monitoring your arrangements

It is extremely important to keep up to date with new developments in the marketplace.  Be sure you know of the latest trends in your particular niche, and check back often to the merchant website for updates that may affect your commission.

Even the most reliable and honest merchants have problems with their affiliate software at some point or another. So be sure to check the merchant’s site often for problems or snags that may affect your commission checks.
